There is very little practical difference between HSBC Premier Elite and Global Private Banking when it comes to banking charges, but there are oddities when it comes to the credit card.

The details below are taken from the 2026 November Bank tariff guide for HSBC Retail Banking & Wealth Customers.

Banking charges

HSBC calls each charge an "item". Each item basically a particular request or scenario. e.g. loss of a cashier's order. deposit a cheque.

The same items are waived across Premier Elite and Global Private Banking ("GPB") tiers. There are not any more items that are waived if you are GPB vs Premier Elite.

You do not save on banking charges by upgrading from Premier Elite to GPB

Regardless of whether you're Premier Elite or GPB, there are banking items where there is a charge as shown below.

Thoughts on Banking charges

I think the banking charges are fair for what they charge on and also the amount. The charges are for things not done online. This means requiring paperwork and/or exceptions (cancel/change), human involvement for processing (including physical mail), legacy technologies such as fax, and finance related charges such as overdraft or loans.

Credit Card charges

For HSBC your banking tier determines the card that you can get.

Banking Tier HSBC Global Private Bank HSBC Premier Elite
Credit Card HSBC Prive HSBC Premier

What you may find strange is there is no HSBC Premier Elite credit card. HSBC Premier Elite status gets you the HSBC Premier credit card which is at Mastercard's World tier.

There is no HSBC Premier Elite credit card

There is however, an HSBC Premier Elite Mastercard Debit card at Mastercard's World Elite tier, which I think is the best debit card in Hong Kong. From the end-user perspective, you are getting all the Mastercard World Elite benefits, but it feels odd you cannot show off a higher credit card, if that's what you are after.

Both the HSBC Premier and GPB cards are black

Unfortunately both the new HSBC Premier card and the Global Private Banking cards are black. From afar, they just look like black cards. The only person that can tell the difference is up close. This means you, or perhaps someone at a store, restaurant or hotel that you hand the card to. But wait, where are the places you need to use a physical credit card instead of a digital wallet? The answer is probably during hotel check-in. You will impress no one with your GPB card except for the person checking you into your hotel.

The only person you will impress with HSBC Prive is the person handling your hotel check-in.

The funny thing is, if you qualify for Premier Elite, you meet the asset eligibility requirement of HSBC Global Private Banking. You just need to submit a request/application form. GPB is opt-in if you will. Presumably you opt-in for the services such as legacy planning and more advanced financial products instead of for eligibility to the HSBC Prive card which is at World Elite level.

So what do you get with the HSBC Prive card? See below.

Thoughts on Credit card charges

The first thing you'll see is an annual charge for HSBC Prive. I'll explain the HSBC Prive benefits fully in a separate post, but all you need to know is the biggest benefit of HSBC Prive is the buy 1 get 1 free benefit for business/first class airplane tickets.

The buy 1 get 1 free airplane ticket seems amazing at first, but there are a lot of restrictions.

The paid ticket must be booked in the highest, non-restricted fare class. The highest fare can cost substantially more than the lowest cost restricted fares. How much you get out of buy 1 get 1 free is questionable.

I'm also not sure whether you save or waste more time booking the ticket. You cannot use Google Flights or an airline's website and then just buy 2 tickets and get charged for one. You will need to use HSBC Privé Mastercard Premium Concierge to buy the ticket.

The principal cardholder must use the paid ticket, and the companion must share the exact same itinerary on eligible non-codeshare flights. Bookings require 14 days to 6 months advance notice and are limited to once per membership year.

OK ... assuming the buy 1 get 1 free plane ticket is a good deal, perhaps HSBC is doing cost recovery with the annual fee? I think it's the weird psychological condition where we think something is more valuable because we pay (a lot) more for it.

From another perspective, it does not make sense to charge for something that was free before (at the Premier level). To further fan your anger, Premier offers perpetually waived annual fees. There isn't even an option to get out of the HSBC Prive annual fee via some (ridiculous) amount of annual spend.

It also seems petty to me HSBC charges the annual fee because the latest Net Interest Margin (NIM) reported by HSBC in the first half of 2026 is 1.61%.

Net Interest Margin (NIM) measures the difference between the interest a bank earns on assets (such as loans and securities) and the interest it pays out on liabilities (such as customer deposits and borrowings), expressed as a percentage of its average earning assets.

I look at it this way: if I have HKD 16m at HSBC, on average, HSBC is making 1.61% off HKD 16m, which is HKD 257,600. HSBC is almost making 10x what the annual fee is for HSBC Prive.

HSBC should make HSBC Prive free for me. If someone has HKD 16m+ tied up at HSBC, beyond NIM, they are also likely contributing fees to HSBC for other products/services. This means HSBC is making even more than almost 10x the annual HSBC Prive fee.

Closing thoughts

You definitely get more out of GPB if find an airfare that pays off the annual fee. Other benefits from HSBC Prive may not be that valuable to you if you do not or cannot use them. As a high-roller your time is easily worth over USD 100/hour. It's unclear whether the HSBC Prive card benefits will sway you with spending time to use those benefits which are likely worth less than your time. e.g. lounge access and dining at the airport is nice to have but not must have. You can eat better elsewhere or just skip the dining for many reasons.

If you're rich and have time, get HSBC Prive. If you're rich and are busy, HSBC is of no consequence to you.
