People go to Nha Trang mostly for beaches/resorts and perhaps 1 to 3 days at VinWonders (see my guide). First time visitors could complete in 1 day the local sightseeing (<4 hours) and watch the Life Puppets (water puppets). I would suggest 2+ days since you're probably there for the beach/resort, and also because the Life Puppets show is only on Weds, Fri, Sat and Sun at 6pm.

Main things to see

Most of the 1/2 day (4 hours) Nha Trang tours include the following places shown below. I've added my opinion and suggested duration in the last column.

Unless you are traveling solo, want to support the tourism industry, or prefer hearing guides and cannot/do not want to use Grab to get around, I would sight-see on your own. The price of 1 person on a tour is more than what I paid on my own (tickets for 2 adults and a child + transportation).

Place Description and Tips Do It Yourself
Institute of Oceanography Whale skeleton, live regional marine life such as huge sea turtles and sharks, and specimens that are dry preserved or preserved in formaldehyde Yes, 45 mins
Hon Chong Chong Rocks formation. Starred in some TV dramas. Unless you want to hear stories about the shapes, you can look at the plethora of pics online Skip
Stone Church Catholic church for Gothic-style architecture, also known as Nhà thờ Núi. Reviews online say this church charges for entry. Blasphemy. Plenty of pictures online available. Skip
Long Son Pagoda 19th century; oldest Buddhist site in Nha Trang. 152 steps to see the Buddha and view of all of Nha Trang. 1 to 1.5hrs
Po Nagar Cham Towers 8th century hilltop temple complex by the Cham culture dedicated to Yan Po Nagar, the goddess of the country, who came to be identified with the Hindu goddesses Bhagavati and Hariti, and who in Vietnamese is called Thiên Y Thánh Mẫu. Allocate more time if you aren't dressed with shoulders and knees covered, and need to rent a robe to go inside the temples (to pray). The attraction is the site and structures, not the inside, which is more so for churches. Yes, 45 mins

Other things to consider

Place Description and Tips Duration
Thap Ba Mud Bath Mud bath and hot spring swimming pool 3km from Po Nagar 2+ hrs
Night Market 500m long pedestrian street offering food, everyday stuff, souvenirs Depends on you
VinWonders Nha Trang Theme park, including water park and spa. See my guide. 1 to 3 days
Life Puppets See the Water Puppets section below. Highly recommended. 2 hours

Water Puppets

Water puppetry is an art form (múa rối nước) that started in the 11th century in the rural villages of northern Vietnam. While it originated in the north, there are now also shows in central Vietnam (Huế and Hội An), and south Vietnam (Ho Chih Minh). It is exactly what it sounds like; puppetry performed in water.

You're more likely to learn about water puppets when you research Hanoi's top attractions, but I however, would recommend the water puppets show ("Life Puppets") at the Đó Theatre in Nha Trang over the Hanoi one if you only had to watch one.

Here's the quick comparison:

Hanoi Nha Trang
Name Thang Long Water Puppet show Life Puppets show
Venue Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre - classic theater in Old Quarter Đó Theatre - 400b VND, Instagram-friendly architectural landmark
Show Style Classic Modern
Puppet Types Water puppets only Water, string, shadow, animated/motion puppets
Performers Hidden behind bamboo curtain Visible on stage with puppets, combining dance & acrobatics
Story/theme Rice farming, village legends, folk tales 12 Zodiac signs
Format Standalone 3 to 5 min stories over 50 mins Continuous 60 mins story

Although I attended both, my preference is for Life Puppets in Nha Trang for the modern visual spectacle, and because of logistics, comfort and cleanliness. If you prefer tradition over anything else, Hanoi it is.

Allocate 2 hours for Life Puppets to cover transportation time + show time

This is my opinion and experience:

Hanoi Nha Trang
Venue Old and beat up, including seats. Chaotic. Nice and new everything. Orderly.
Seat Comfort Less More
Cleanliness Less More
Tickets Ticket pickup at agency nearby starting 45 mins before show, show at venue Buy online, show QR code at venue
Be seated 15 mins before show, not enforced 15 mins before show, not enforced
Downtown hotel to venue Highly variable; 10 to 30 mins Predictable: 17 to 22 mins

In addition to the 6pm Life Puppets show at the Do Theatre on Weds, Fri, Sat and Sun, there is also the Chum show which has some acrobatics involved, at 3pm on Mon, Weds, Fri, Sat and Sun.

VinWonders Nha Trang

VinWonders Nha Trang is worthy of its own page.

Where to stay

If you've been following this blog, you'll know I use Marriott and Hyatt a lot and prefer to stick to them until I get Marriott Lifetime Platinum. Hilton is not available in Nha Trang.

Marriott

There are a 4 options.

Nha Trang Marriott Resort & Spa on Hon Tre Island (where VinWonders is). Based on reviews I've read about the property being old, poor cleanliness and pictures of dead bugs taken by other tourists, this was an absolute no.

Sheraton Nha Trang - Highly recommended for downtown Nha Trang access. At 4.6/5 it is one of the top-rated Marriotts in Nha Trang and surrounding areas. I stayed here for 2 nights and got upgraded to a 1BR suite with amazing waterfront views, even from the toilet! It is the best toilet view of any hotel I've ever stayed at.

Until I write a more complete post, here are my notes:

The lounge is excellent. Great service, food and drink.

The gym is an OK size and the equipment is new.

The hotel has its own private section on the beach just across the road.

Some guests complained that the pool had loose tiles at the bottom and unclear water, but I did not experience that although it is one of the older hotels in downtown. In 2024 I stayed at the Sheraton Da Nang in Vietnam. Now, that place had a problem with swimming pool tiles.

I got a room package that included dinner buffet, which is normally 350K VND (US$16) per person. The buffet had plenty of seafood, including a lot of cold prawns and crabs that people didn't seem to want to eat. Quality was fine for seafood. Meats were a bit dry. Desserts were good.

Four Points by Sheraton Nha Trang - Just 200m West of the Sheraton Nha Trang. Although it was less half the price of the Sheraton, I chose the Sheraton as it is a better holiday-class hotel. It is closer to the beach/waterfront, and I get better benefits as a Marriott Titanium member there (guaranteed free breakfast and lounge access for me and my family, room upgrade if available).

JW Marriott Cam Ranh Resort and Spa - OK, it's not Nha Trang. It's 35+ mins by car depending on time of day from downtown Nha Trang. 15 mins north of Cam Ranh airport; how you fly to Nha Trang.

This is the place if you want beach and peace and quiet. Nha Trang downtown beachfront is busy and noisy as it's next to the main road.

This is the best JW Resort I have been to out of 3 others. At 4.6/5 it is one of the top-rated Marriotts in Nha Trang and surrounding areas. I stayed at this new (2025) property for 3 nights, after finishing all the sightseeing and experiences in Nha Trang. I didn't get upgraded to a villa despite my status. The 1BR villa was not available and the next available step up had they given me an upgrade would be a 3BR villa that costs 5x what my reserved room cost.

Everything is new, beautiful and the service is excellent. The breakfast was JW quality - better than the Sheraton Nha Trang - especially the baked goods. Lunch and dinner at all resort restaurants were also great.

Rooms are massive. The lazy river and pool are awesome. Mostly cardio gym equipment with fewer fixed weight machines, but enough to get stuff done.

Depending on where you're staying and what you're wearing you may want to call the free buggy service from your accommodations to the beach front Italian restaurant, adults and infinity pool, which is up to 500m away.

Full review in later post.

The Westin Resort & Spa Cam Ranh - It cost more than the JW Marriott despite a lower rating, and this is the furthest away from Nha Trang. It's a great location as it is just a few mins south of Cam Ranh airport.

Hyatt

There's a huge Hyatt Regency downtown, but I didn't stay there as I thought the Sheraton Nha Trang was slightly cheaper and slightly closer to where I wanted to go in Nha Trang. Just 600m south of the Sheraton Nha Trang.

Vinpearl Resort & Spa

This is the top-rated family friendly hotel and it's great if you intend to spend time at VinWonders. It's a bit less convenient since you need to take the cable car or speed boat to get to/from the island. Downtown Nha Trang has a beachfront, so you don't get closer beach access from staying there.
