Booking.com Genius loyalty program review

The program is for aspirers, people that are sold by the idea of potential travel benefits that can be kept forever. The discounts aren't that great, coupon hunting will get you just as much. The higher-level benefits such as free breakfast and room upgrade only apply to "select stays".

Benefits analysis

Booking.com is owned by the Booking Holdings, which also owns Priceline, Agoda and Kayak. Let's dive into the Genius loyalty program.

Below is a table from booking.com

Level 1 is what you get for registration as a member.

The appeal here is it sounds relatively easy to reach higher levels - for life - based on just 5 bookings or 15 bookings in 2 years.

1 hotel night counts as a booking, so forget Level 2, reach Level 3 after just 15 1-night stays in 2 years.

Here's the reality:

  • Discounts - While bigger discounts sound great, the coupon / promo code industry has made it easy for anyone to get 10-15% off. There are other sites that offer low prices without reaching those tiers.
  • Free breakfast and room upgrades - these only apply to select stays, so it's not every hotel you see on the site. You'll naturally be paying more than before for a hotel stay if you want this "free" benefit.

Conclusion

If you've signed up for this loyalty program, you'll likely reach the top and wonder "now what?". The most likely feeling is that you've wasted your time, and you should've considered loyalty programs with more tangible benefits like cash back or other redemption options. Perhaps other programs with more appealing lifetime status benefits are of interest, but those require 600+ nights (e.g. Marriott), which is much more than 15 days.
